Music and blog to tell you my story – Jesse Gorter

Under my spell

August 23rd, 2010

Sometimes you just want to forget all the rules and write music as a picture in your head. For this one I really experimented with the sound design. It sounds hypnotizing…like a snake charmer charming the snake. There is some monk chanting in there as well. I’m still not clear on what this tune is about. It’s too abstract. Highvoltage called it like a robot war. To me it’s more like an eastern monk hypnotizing you to do as he wishes. Which is odd since they don’t usually do that :’)

The Chamber

August 21st, 2010

Back in 2007 I was getting tired of writing short 3-4 minutes pieces of dance/ambient/pop/underground music. Having enjoyed classical training I wanted to flex my composing muscles to write something more challenging. I was particulary taking a shine to Mike Oldfields Tubular Bells 2 and Ommadawn records. Records where the music would just do whatever it wished. Unconforming, ever challenging and defying the rules.

I just did not like the notion that I had to put a beat under every melody and that every melody had to hook. I wished to look deeper and the results were a very raw recording which is now being unleashed on the unsuspecting audience. The coverart is still being drawn but the music is here. The album is called Timeless. I rerecorded and mastered it in 2009.

Sensual

July 7th, 2010

Since I’m going to Barcelona, why not try my hands to write a Spanish piece? Almost every time I pick up a guitar or play the piano, something exotic comes out when I just start to improvise. This does not always transfer to my music online, but I guess a third of the music I compose has spanish/arabian/eastern influences in it. Heck; I even devised my own tone scale for it.Maybe I was a gypsie in a former life ;-D

For now, enjoy this piece.

Dead winters

Jammed this together with two friends. Guitars by Jeroen, vocals by Peter, drums, trumpets , production and organ by me. Sounds like the Doors.

Scarlet

Ever watched the movie ‘Girl with a pearl earring’ ? There’s this scene where Vermeer explains how paintings are a window to the soul of the artist.

I actually pressed pause, fired up Ableton Live (still stuck with version 7), and wrote this fragment. I wrote it all the way through and finished watching the movie. :-)

I just cannot express what this song means! I have not figured it out for myself yet. Maybe you can tell me…

Dreaming of New York

It doens’t make sense. To feel so attracted to a city without having a rational reason.

It was influenced by Philip Glass and Lost in Translation.

It is raining ducks

My mood?

Playfull :) I just jammed this together while a friend was watching. It’s one of the most fun experimental things I’ve done in ages. It sounds like ducks are quacking somehow. It has a flow that just goes on and on…like a roundabout.
